Offered for sale is an absolutely unique item
for anyone interested in US Army memorabilia! A 100% genuine solid brass sign (and one from two ever made!) from the entrance of one of the four US ARMY barracks in West-Berlin, the mc Nair BARRACKS in excellent condition! The very heavy solid brass sign is mounted on a custom made solid Teak (!) frame with heavy duty hangers. All the letters are solid brass, too and each one of them is screwed onto the heavy brass sheet. It was manufactured from a company in Berlin and there is a punched in makers logo on the lower right corner of the front. There were only two similar signs ever made, one was mounted on the main Gate of the McNair barracks and one on the back entrance. The one from the main gate is visible on one of the photos below, it was mounted on a concrete block right in front of the guard house. The one which is for sale on our web site is the one which was mounted on the fence besides the back gate. The McNair barracks were located in the far South-West corner of West-Berlin in the district Zehlendorf where also the US Army Berlin headquarters and the tank barracks (Turner barracks) were located. The McNair barracks was the plant of the famous Telefunken company until the end of WW II, the US Army headquarter was an official Luftwaffe building and the US Army Andrews barracks in nearby Berlin-Lichterfelde, the fourth of the US Army barracks in Berlin were formerly the barracks of the LSSAH, the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler! It is not known what happened to the other McNair barracks brass sign after the US Army left Berlin in 1994 and it is also uncertain if any of the other signs from the headquarter or the other three barracks have survived, there is a realistic chance that they went into the scrap or have been recycled! It can be that this brass sign is the only survivor coming from one of the most historic places in history: Berlin!
This photo shows the back of the sign and its solid Teak frame. The little dots on the aged brass are not dirt, these are the nuts from the bolts which hold the brass letters in place.

Please note the front gate sign on the photo above. The item offered here once hung at the rear entrance gate. These photos were taken when the US Army still guaranteed the freedom of West-Berlin which was an island in the Communist Block. The pictures were taken in July 1994 on the last Open House of the US Army in Berlin. |
