The former Höhere Knabenschule (High School for boys) was built 1911 and was located in the street Parkaue 25-29 in Berlin, district Lichtenberg. After the war, when Berlin was divided, the school was in East Berlin and became the "Zentralhaus der Jungen Pioniere" (headquarters of the Young Pioneers), a youth organization in the Russian controlled GDR (Communist Germa-ny) that was quite comparable to the Pimpf / Hitler Youth in the Third Reich (only that the Junge Pioniere had to wear a very ugly blue shirt...!). On January 27, 1934 the school was named Joseph-Goebbels-Schule, after the well known Gauleiter of Berlin and Reich minister of People's Enlightment and Propaganda!

the school survived the war almost undamaged. The photo above shows the (then former) Goebbels school in 1947. It was then located in the Russian sector of Berlin which was divided into four sectors after the Third Reich came to an end. Each sector was controlled by one of the victorious Allies: USA, England, France and Russia. The building was used as a school only for a short time after the war. The Russians ordered it to become a "Jugendkulturhaus" (House of culture for the youth). It then was remodeled and in 1950 it opened as Berlin's first theater for kids and teens!
