KONZENTRATIONSLAGER ORANIENBURG

(Oranienburg concentration camp)

This almost impossible to find book on the first KL on German soil was the reaction to anti-Nazi propaganda published outside the German Reich regarding the maltreatment of the inmates! KL Oranienburg was under the control of the SA in the early stages of the Third Reich until the SS was put incharge of all concentration camps. A very rare book in very good condition!

The Oranienburg concentration camp was established shortly after Hitler's appointment as chancellor in January 1933. The SA (Sturmabteilung or Stormtroopers) together with the Police organized concentration camps beginning in February 1933. The Oranienburg concen-tration camp was operated in a former brewery compound until the nearby Sachsenhausen concentration camp was established. The SA was eventually replaced by Himmler's SS as the concentration camp system expanded to an ever increasing number of political oppo-nents and Jews.

The 6 x 8 inches hardcover book with 246 pages is a very well illustrated original Third Reich book on the daily life of the inmates of the first German concentration camp. There were many anti-Nazi voices outside the Reich saying that the prisoners were mistreated, tortured or even killed in KL Oranienburg. This rare book was the reaction to this propa-ganda. It shows that even that the inmates did hard labor they were well fed, housed, were kept mentally and physically in good shape. The general intention (except for Jews) was to make a good fellow "Volksgenosse" out of the inmate who would then fit into the National Socialist society. This is where the infamous concentration camp slogan comes from: "Arbeit macht frei" (labor shall make you free).

there are several interesting copies of documents in this book which explain the death of one of the inmates. Of course he died because of a heart failure, one of the most common official causes of death in concentration camps!
