BUCHENWALD AND DACHAU CONCENTRATION CAMPS

THIS IS A VERY INTERESTING, RARE AND POIGNANT GROUPING OF OVER 70 ITEMS RELATING TO A MAN WHO SPENT FIVE YEARS IN THE HIDEOUS CONCENTRATION CAMP SYSTEM - AND LIVED, AND THEN FOUND A NEW LIFE IN USA!

Theodor Marian Domek was born in Gnieze, in the district of Poznan Poland on 24th March 1909 and by age of 30 was a Chaplain in the Polish Army. When Poland fell in 1940; he was captured -perhaps fortunately- by the Germans and was sent to Buchenwald Concentration Camp - rather to Katyn wood where most of the Polish Officer Corps met their deaths from the hands of the invading Soviets. He was later moved to Dachau Concentration Camp, where he spent most of the war until Dachau was liberated by the US Army in 1945. During his time in Dachau it seems he was permitted to act in some official category, possibly as a chaplain or priest.

Following his liberation from Dachau by US Forces, Domek was housed in a private German house in Lauf near Nuremberg and was attached to the US XV Corps (APO 340) as a Captain Priest working in support and rehabilitation of Polish POW’s and displaced persons (DPs), he worked in this capacity for two years. During this time he must have applied to emigrate to the United States, as on 22nd September 1947 he sailed from Bremen to New York on the ex Liberty Ship SS Marine Flasher on one of the Displaced Persons voyages which brought liberated Jews and other DPs to a new life in the United States. During the journey he was issued over $400.00 to issue to the passengers as 'Board Money' and the original passenger list along with the signatures of each passenger is part of this collection.

Following their arrival in the USA, Domek continued with his faith and became a Catholic Priest in US, living in Chicago, California and Wisconsin. Eventually it seems he had nervous problems, suggested by his doctor as a result of his imprisonment in the Concentration Camps and he left the church.

This unique grouping would make an interesting research project.

The unique grouping consists of over 70(!) items, including the following:
