original bust of one of the best military Leaders which Prussia ever had! This bust is about one hundred (100) years old, maybe even older and was purchased in Berlin, Germany many years ago. Gerhard Johann von Scharnhorst was
born in 1756 and passed away 1813. He became world famous because he restructured the Prussian army which was reduced to the half or its former size after the lost war against Napoleon. He invented the idea not only to arm a certain number of professional soldiers but, in case of an attack from outside, the entire population. With smart ideas like that he made career first in the army of Hannover, then in Prussia and became General adjudant of the King and then War Minister of Prussia. Adolf Hitler named one of the best battleships of the Reichskriegsmarine (RKM) after him. |
The bust has a height of 14 inches (or 360mm),
10-1/2 inches (or 270mm) wide at the shoulders
and the square base is 5 x 5 inches (or 130mm)
The bronze hull of this item is very thin and put around some hard stuff which
we were unable to identify. The hull has some cracks, especially on the right side
of the head but it does not affect the historic value of this unique item.
