WOHNUNGSMELDESCHEIN

RESIDENCE REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE

It was (and still is) the law in Germany that every citizen reports to the authorities where he/she lives. The Einwohnermeldeamt, run by the German Police, keeps track of that and in 1935 they issued this Wohnungsmeldeschein to Karl Georg Schmidt from Bautzen. The document asked for the profession and personal status (single, married, etc), even though this should not be relevant for the purpose of this docu-ment! At the bottom it says "keep carefully and show when neccessary".
