WEHRMACHT-FÜHRERSCHEIN

(DRIVING PERMIT GERMAN ARMED FORCES)

The Wehrmacht driving permit looks almost identical to the civilian driving permit that were issued in the Third Reich. Both were a folded four pages document made out of grey leinen. While the civilian permit was good for life the Wehrmacht version was only valid for the duration of the owners military service. On the second page it was clearly identifyed which class(es) of vehicle(s) the owner was allowed to operate. In this case Franz Priess, who saw service in Kiel, one of the main Kriegsmarine ports on German soil during the Third Reich, was permitted to operate class 3 vehicles which means regular cars and light trucks. Driving permits that were issued late in the war were no longer made out of the more durable leinen. Light grey card stock was used instead.
