ITEM #W 49
This WHW collecting box was used in the Gau (district) Wien (Vienna), which means it must have been made after 1938. Austria became part of the German Reich in October 1938. It is 6-1/2 inch tall and 4-1/4 inch in diameter.
The glued on paper has some minor damage, the rest of this interesting item is in very good condition (and it would make a great piggy bank, too!) |

RARE ORIGINAL WINTERHILFSWERK SAMMELBÜCHSE VOLUNTEERS FROM NEARLY EVERY NAZI ORGANIZATION WENT FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE TO COLLECT MONEY FOR THOSE IN NEED IN THE REICH! On September 13, 1933 Adolf Hitler and Dr. Joseph Goebbels officially started the first Winterhilfswerk des deutschen Volkes (Winter Aid Program Of The German People). The goal was to collect as much money as possible to support the many Germans who still lived in hunger and poverty in the first year of National Socialist Germany. 358 million Reichsmark were collected in the first year and each year the amount of money that the German people gave was increased until it reached 680(!) million Reichs-mark in the winter 1939/40. Some (or many?) said that the WHW indirectly helped to finance the war because the social welfare from the state could be cut back and the freed money could be used to rearm the country.
